Emmett and the CATastrophe

My first author/illustrated picture book…

The working title for my first author/illustrated picture book is Emmett and the CATastrophe.

An inventive mouse must defend his attic home against an invading cat using the fantastical machines he creates from discarded junk, but as the battles escalate he starts to question if he really does know all about cats.

My story plays on the themes of inventiveness and creation, and adjusting to new developments in life. In addition to the universal themes of friendship and dealing with change, the book has the potential to be used creatively in schools for STEM units.

I have been experimenting with an illustration style that relies more on tone created by graphite and a simplified application of colour. I’ve placed a couple of sample illustrations within the dummy.
